Translating Alt Tags

It’s come to my attention recently that we are now able to download our language csv files and within them we can translate our image alt tags. While this is a step in the right direction its incredibly hard to navigate if you don’t have any existing alt tags input, and the file IDs do not correlate to the file names we uploaded. If you want to change one word you have to export and reimport everything, which can take 15 minutes to finish. Its just not user friendly overall.

I’m hoping Shopify will integrate this into Translate and Adapt or via the image editor. They responded when Canadians needed HS Codes and Country of Origin info on the product pages, to keep up with shipping requirements. We need these translatable alt tags for a truly accessible experience and the current system requires hours and hours of work just to update our existing images with tags.

Does anyone have any solutions (outside of paying for an app)? Or is Shopify considering improvements in this department? We had hoped we were buying into an accessible, translatable platform so we’re really struggling with this issue.

Thanks for your help!

Yup!

We can hope in the future that Shopify must integrate it with the Translate and Adapt app.

You’ve tagged this with troubleshooting but there is nothing to troubleshoot as this is a process problem about a feature request.

This is a process problem , the translations UX are just a convenient thing to blame.

Don’t have empty alt-txt in the first place.
Fix that , you’ve probably been hemorrhaging conversions and not even knowing it.
If not outright resulting is those needing accessibility just plain bouncing.
And that isn’t shopify’s fault, it’s your data to manage responsibly.

At minimum image file names should either be descriptive enough to reuse as the alt-txt alone or in combination with product properties.
When that’s fixed then just use excel/google-sheets, etc etc to prefill the info for bulk import.

Or use advanced features of shopify flow or some other automation tool to prefill image tag info with some baseline info to remove a step.

This is NOT the type of workflow that actually fixes process or scales.
Manually entering info one image at a time is a bad time and should be a LAST RESORT for one-offs such as spotting a typo.
Don’t come at this stuff backwards it will waste a TON of time trapping you in bad workflows.
