Verify your identity by adding a drivers license email

I received an email that states “To keep your Shopify Payments account up to date, you need to verify your identity by Sunday January 14, 2024 at 2:09 pm. If you don’t verify your identity, you may lose the ability to accept payments on your store and you won’t receive payouts.”

When I select the “Verify identity” link, it takes me to my store and asks me to submit either my drivers license, government issued ID or passport.

Is this something I need to do or is it a scam?

Hi, @Collinr !

Thank you so much for sharing your question with our network.

To put your mind at ease, it is definitely standard practice for our Shopify Payments team to request verification documents and put your payments on hold while this is processed. That’s not to say that phishing attempts are just as clever these days, so it’s imperative that you confirm the email is in fact from Shopify.

This is easily confirmed by reviewing the sender email address, which should be something along the lines of no-reply@shopify.com. If you’re concerned about the validity of the sender email address you see, then please share it with me here and I’d be glad to clarify if that is one we own. If it is ours, please proceed with next steps.

If you have concerns about phishing attempts in the future, then also make sure to review our official documentation on keeping your account secure right here.

I look forward to your reply,

Olivia, thank you for the information, the mailers address is mailer@shopify.com.

Please see a copy of the email below

Thank you so much for offering that context, @Collinr .

I can confirm that mailer@shopify.com is certainly one of our email addresses and this is verification required by us. Please complete the requested steps at your earliest convenience.

Warm regards,
