Wanting to find out why customers abandoned their carts

We’re seeing quite some abandon checkout. How do we find out the reasons?

Any ways to go about this without using an app or paid service to begin with?

I would look at any data you have on the checkout forms. Try and identify fields with a high number of error counts or long completion times. This could be an indicator of potential drop-of.

Not sure if you are tracking any client or server side error, but I would look at any reports you have on errors on the checkout form and see if you can spot any patterns. Doing so for example helped us Identify that there was a big issue with our recaptcha and credit card fields.
