What are all possible report options in Shopify POS?

Topic summary

A user migrating from QuickBooks POS seeks three specific reports in Shopify POS:

Requested Reports:

  • Sales by store (already found)
  • Sales by category/collection
  • Sales by tax category

Key Limitations Identified:
Shopify’s native Analytics/Reports don’t support detailed category or tax reporting because collections are “virtual” groupings rather than backend data structures, and tax reporting is limited due to varying state laws.

Suggested Solutions:

  • Use product “types” as categories to generate sales-by-type reports
  • Install third-party reporting apps with custom report builders:
    • Better Reports (60+ built-in reports, 14-day trial, can create custom category/collection/tax reports)
    • Report Pundit (14-day trial, custom report creation)
    • Mipler Advanced Reports (7-day trial, custom reporting)

Important Caveat:
Sales by collection reports may show duplicated data since products often appear in multiple collections.

The discussion remains open with another user expressing the same need for taxable vs. non-taxable sales reporting.

I’m not finding what I need in Analytics/Reports

I need specific reports I am currently able to run in QB POS.

  1. sales by store (found)

  2. sales by category/collection

  3. sales by tax category

Where do I find all possible report options in Shopify POS?

Thank you.

Shopify Collections are more of a “virtual” construct or grouping of products i.e. something that you yourself create, and not a proper data point or a structure in the backend data tables. Therefore you won’t get a report on that. Taxes are similar due to the different tax laws in different states. Therefore you won’t get a dedicated report other than the products report. With the product reports, you can evaluate specific products plus their taxes.

We have our “types” set up as categories so we can run a report on sales by
type. We also use the app Better Reports which is INFINITELY customizable
and has impeccable customer service. They will help you create a report for
any data you need and get back to you quickly.

Hi @TresaM

Claudia here from Better Reports.

Have you been able to find a solution for this? If not, I would recommend our app Better Reports.

We can easily create a sales report by category if you use Shopify’s categories in the product organization section. If your categories are stored in tags or metafields, we can create a custom category field pulling those tags/metafields values to create the sales report.

We can also create a report for sales by collection. However, it is important to remember that products are often repeated in multiple collections, so their sales will be duplicated in this type of report.

We can also create a report showing sales by tax names (in combination) or a report showing tax amounts by tax name separately.

In addition to this, Better Reports has more than 60 built-in reports available out of the box that cover many common use cases for merchants. You can schedule reports to run at set frequencies to your email or Google Drive or export the reports in CSV, Excel or PDF format.

I encourage you to install Better Reports and start your free 14-day trial and I’ll be happy to set this up for you.

What do you think?

Did you solve this? I too need a sales by category report for sales of taxable vs non-taxable items.
