What does the country selector setting in theme customization mean and how does it work?

Topic summary

Main issue: Understanding the country/market selector in the theme customizer and ensuring consistent storefront content across regions.

What it is: The selector is tied to Shopify Markets and lets you apply theme customizations per market (region/country group). Selecting a market shows that market’s version; changes to Default do not automatically sync to other markets.

Implications: If you’ve edited specific markets, storefront content can differ by region. Your Liquid-based localizations are separate and still apply.

How to keep one consistent site:

  • Avoid using market-specific customizations; revert to Default in the theme customizer.
  • Do not switch into individual markets when editing, or remove any market-level overrides.

Managing which markets appear: Admin > Settings > Markets > International > Edit > Countries/regions > Edit, then limit the countries/regions you want to appear.

Status/outstanding question: A user asked how to fully “disable” the selector; no definitive toggle was provided. Guidance is to revert to Default and avoid market-specific edits. Screenshots were referenced but not essential.

Hi!

I’ve recently noticed there’s a country selector in the theme customizer and it seems to determine what content gets shown in what region:

While I do sell in the listed countries, I have no interest in customizing the theme country by country manually. Any localizations I need have been made in liquid within the theme.

I noticed changing the default content does not make the same changes in the other listed regions. I’m now paranoid that this is some functionality I’ve missed and my site content is missing recent developments in my theme in some regions.

What does this country selector do? How do I make sure the theme and site content is the same no matter where the user visits the site from (aside from liquid specific localizations)? Is this something I need to switch off if I just want to manage a single version of the site in all regions?

Hi @Cashimir

You can go to your store admin > Settings > Markets > International > Edit > Countries/regions > Edit, select only country that you want to appear.

Hi,

Can you share your store?

Hi @Cashimir , this is a market selector which enables you to customize storefronts by market. If you want them to be all the same, don’t use this (and revert to default).

how do i disable it? i cant find the setting anywhere
