I had added several products, however none show up when i look at my store.

are your products with the status active? And are they published in the proper sales channels?
My products are active, however i do not know if it is in the proper channel
I am really new to this and having trouble getting started

You can try to follow these three steep
Step 1: When you create a product, it must be active
Step 2: And then click the Manage sales channels

Step 3: Select Online store
You can try this i think it will solve your problem
