I have the basic plan and I have no access to themes. If I click on Online Store it shows me only Themes and Preferences. If I click Themes it says Starter and then just asks me to upgrade my plan. I tried to download a free theme but it will not show up. I thought every shopify store starts with Dawn. I started with the free trial and had a theme already selected but it did not carry over.

As you are seeing a prompt within the Themes Section of the Shopify admin, I’d encourage you to confirm you have selected the Shopify Basic Plan. The Shopify Starter Plan comes equipped with a simplified online store, including a dedicated theme called the Start Theme. This plan does not provide you the option to add additional themes or make edits.
To confirm this, you can:
- Head to Settings > Plan, from the Shopify admin.
- Under Plan Details, locate the current plan the shop is on.
For more information on the Shopify Starter Plan, you can check out the plan details here. To access additional themes, you can upgrade to the Shopify Basic Plan.

Thank you! I thought I had it switched to the Basic but it wasn’t! I got it on the Basic and the themes are back to working.
