Why is product weight suddenly required to edit or create products?

We do not use weight based shipping costs and have never entered weight for our products. All of a sudden today I can not edit any product without it requiring a weight to save it. I alos can not create a new product without entering weight. Anyone else have this issue or know how to turn this back off?

After speaking with support, the developers “forced” this change with their logic being “physical products should have a weight, right?” - No customers or customer service team was notified of the change (hence no response here from the mods). Very short-sighted, Shopify, and a very amateurish move by your technical team. Should we be worried about the financial state of your company, as this is obviously not the type of service of which we have grown accustomed to - Bad tech teams and developers create bad products

this creates additional work for your customers, with the developer teams only “fix” suggestion is to have the customer create a csv file with the weight values added - So a change was made, without notification, and you are requesting the customer do additional IT work to address the issue created by your team?

I came here to see if others were having this problem as well and am disappointed to find out that it’s a forced change. So, are we having to go back and put a weight under already made products or is this just for new products going forward. I can’t understand why you would need a weight if you aren’t shipping something!!!

Having the same issue this end. All of a sudden I cannot load an item without weight even though we have not selected that on the shipping.

Developers need to check their work before launching an update, poor management and quality control thats costing us money!!

Had the same issue, we have thousands of items. Our major issue was some of ours DO have weights (we use this to filter bulk freight items)

My solution was:

Export all as CSV file

Highlight the “Variant Grams” column & use ‘Find & Replace’

Use the values - “Find what: 0” and “Replace with: 0.1”

Make sure the “Match Case” & “Match Entire Cell Contents” options are ticked

Import the products back in :ok_hand:

Worked for me and quick too.

This is a work-around, but unfortunately csv files don’t load stylized product pages correctly. I don’t think a solution is as much of an issue for most of us (it’s obvious a default value needs to be added), but the fact that a major change was pushed through without notification. Businesses follow processes. Processes are written into manuals. Employees follow manuals. Manuals are created from the information provided. It was Shopify’s responsibility to notify users of the change, and they failed, hence last-minute breakdowns of processes that truly shouldn’t be an issue. While it may have seemed like common-sense to a programmer, thorough review would have revealed that this would obviously have a negative affect on the user. Additionally, the fact that this change does not benefit the user and on the surface appears to only benefit behind-the-scenes product data-mining, makes the entire update suspect for the end user/customer. We haven’t experienced this type of issue with Shopify previously, as prior to this update most, if not all, communication has been open and straightforward. Here’s to hoping a mistake is recognized, corrected, and avoided in the future :crossed_fingers:

We too have just woken up to our store now demanding a weight on every individual product. Madness. We have thousands of products and do flat rate shipping. I can’t even set a ‘default’ weight and it won’t allow ‘zero’. Not sure how it’s going to cope with option products created like gift wrapping. If this is a ‘fix’ it is a stupid half thought through one. They should either roll this back immediately or quickly set a means of applying a zero or not applicable/variable weight as a default. Most people are not going to weigh their products. The product weight is not the same as the shipping weight after packaging. Multi orders more so. So people are just going to populate this with nonsense.

I have had a long online chat with support pointing out that for thousands of users to have to do a bulk upload of probably nonsense weights (with the risks and glitches associated with that) is a bit mad when all they need to do is re-enable 0.0 as a valid weight, OR if they need a hard number for some shipping feeds substitute a nominal fractional weight such as 0.1g as the system base value where 0.0 is currently shown.

I explained in some detail that many companies don’t do weight based delivery pricing and that the product weight and (after packaging) postage weight are not the same thing. Nor was I eager to manually weigh a few thousand products and enter them just because the developers didn’t think this one through.

I’m having the same problem. I’ve been trying to get in touch with Shopify & cannot.

I just went to chat and voiced my opinion concerning what the Shopify developers have done

To get someone on chat choose “open a new store”

Please voice your opinion as well!

This was mine:

I am very unhappy that now I have to pay someone to put in a weight of .5 instead of zero. What’s the difference? I’m sure everyone that uses flat rates are very upset and the extra work the developers have cost their customer. It’s ridiculous! How dare they! How dare they! Please forward my comment to them. I am going to wait 2 to 3 days for a fix to this problem.

Yes, seems very short-sighted.

Hi @RRStore

This was a change implemented by shopify so that you can create a weight-based shipping rate for your physical products.

You cannot have ‘0’ as a value for the product weight; if you do not have any shipping that requires the weight of a product, you can add any positive value so that there is no error in your merchant center.

If you need any help, you can reach out to us, and our feed management software will help you manage your feed across multiple platforms.
