We’ve setup a Buy x and Get Y product for free discount, it shows that it is active, but it is not working on the site. What have we missed? What do we need to do so that when a person adds product X, then product Y get’s automatically added to the cart (it needs to show this in the cart)

Currently, the feature of having products automatically added to the cart is not available. With Buy X, Get Y discounts your customers need to add all applicable products to their cart and enter the discount code at checkout to receive the discount. The discounted or free products aren’t added to the cart automatically. As I can completely understand how this may not be ideal, I’m more than happy to share this note with our Developers. We are always looking for ways to improve the platform and appreciate the feedback.
To work around this however, you can check out the Shopify App Store for an available discount app that may allow you to achieve this. For ease, I’ve gone ahead and suggested a few available apps that may allow for this to be completed:

Many merchants have asked about this, but Shopify’s built-in discounts don’t support this functionality. The best solution is to use a third-party app designed specifically for free gifts, like BOGOS App.
