Best way to provide some free downloadable products?

I’m part-way through setting up my Shopify site and will be using it to sell digital downloadable art. As a marketing strategy I also want to provide some “free” items as well. These will be the same high quality as the ones I’m selling I just want to make a few free to people as a way to get some traffic to the site.

What’s the best way of doing this? I’ve already got the app that allows you to make downloads available for purchase (which seems to be working as it should). But if I want to provide some freebies does anyone know the best way to do this? Do I just set the price to zero?

To create free downloadable products, you can just set the price of product to 0, uncheck the shipping cost.

To distribute the product, we will require an app. Shopify provides an app[https://apps.shopify.com/digital-downloads] which is free to use and is perfect for your requirement.

You can create a product with 0 price and provide the downloadable link to description or any part of the product section.

How are you choosing the customer to have access?

You have some options below.

  1. Using liquid. Add a customer tag to customers where you want to provide the access. So when they log in, the product shows. This will need editing the product section. If your using liquid code, there no way that I know that some people can see the product unless customer is logged in and have the said customer tag.

  2. Using javascript. You can send a code to the customer to provide access. You can then add a verification textbox and not show the product unless they have the code. The customer do not need to log in but if the customer is computer savvy, they can override this.

Regardless what option you choose, you will need someone to write this code for you. This is a little personalized and I do not think they offer an app for this.

The easiest way for you would be to make it a 0-price product and allow for customers to be available in a dedicated collection of their own.

Would you eventually convert these freebies back to normal paid product, or they would remain freebies forever?
