Can we apply discount codes after an order is placed?

Topic summary

Users are requesting the ability to apply discount codes to orders after they’ve been placed, a feature that has been requested for years across multiple forum threads. The primary use case involves customers who forget to enter their discount code at checkout and contact support afterward.

Current workarounds have limitations:

  • Partial refunds don’t prevent customers from reusing single-use discount codes
  • Manual discounts don’t automatically recalculate shipping costs when orders fall below free shipping thresholds
  • Tax adjustments aren’t handled properly

Key points of discussion:

  • There’s no official feature request system at Shopify; users are advised to contact support directly
  • Multiple historical threads demonstrate ongoing demand for this functionality
  • While Shopify allows manual discount editing on orders, it doesn’t support applying actual discount codes post-purchase
  • Some frustration expressed about Shopify’s responsiveness to merchant needs

Current capability: Merchants can manually add percentage or fixed-amount discounts when editing orders, but cannot attach specific discount codes that track usage limits and trigger automatic shipping/tax recalculations.

The discussion remains open with no official Shopify response or timeline for implementation.

Hey Shopify,

The community needs you to create a way to apply discount codes to an order after an order is placed. Take a look at how many users ask for this feature, how many threads there are about this, how many years users have been requesting this. Time to implement this feature.

My scenario:

My customer forgot to add their discount code and emailed us asking if we can apply it.

(Yes, I know about the partial refund work around BUT this is not a good solution for several reasons. It’s a temporary fix but doesn’t solve the other problems I mention below.)

What we need to do:

  • Attach a discount code to an order after the order is placed. Important for when discount codes can only be used once per customer. Without being able to attach the discount code, the customer could use that discount more than once or attempt another request for a partial refund.
  • Automatically add shipping costs if the discounted order falls below the free shipping threshold.
  • Adjusts the amount of tax that is collected.

Please get this implemented into Shopify!

For feature request be sure to contact support directly.

Can you reference those posts, for larger issues there’s generally 1 large post where the focus should be and not smaller one off posts.

Also be sure when talking to shopify support, clarify and disambiguate to, avoid creating confusion between adding a discount-code post-checkout and post-order would not be the same as editing an order to add manual discounts to a line-item:

https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/orders/edit-orders#order-edit-discounts

There is no dedicated place to submit feature requests, as stated here by Shopify staff: https://community.shopify.com/c/shopify-discussions/feature-requests/td-p/1277128

That’s why I created this discussion for others to hopefully join in and boost this request.

Here are just a few other discussions to reference of other users requesting the exact same feature I am requesting:

Amazing list, good work. Make sure you are reading/joining those threads!

That feature-request post is alluding to the fact that there’s nothing like an official feature-request form, or page at shopify.com etc.

So you’d still want to contact support directly and make sure someone in the chain sees the request, most merchants do not follow through expecting a random post that may or may not be seen by staff like it’s an indirect gamble. Especially when it’s an old thread and no staff have responded in ~years.

So most features just don’t happen because of lack of merchant rigor, and also solidarity :raised_fist: because there’s over 1million merchant stores but like ~100 people in a request thread.

Welcome to Shopify, the platform that seems to pay little attention to the actual needs of its customers and keeps pushing ahead with updates that add features that were not missing in the first place. Every time I come across an issue that we are facing, a quick search finds that others have complained about it months or years ago and its still not been fixed.

How can it be that I can manually edit an order to apply any discount amount or percentage that I want but I am not able to apply a discount code? Its absolute nonsense and I am now ‘that guy’ who just posts mean things about Shopify instead of the customer who recommends them as the platform of choice.

This thread actually raises an interesting point, there is no dedicated place for submitting a feature or voting on it which I think says it all. Shopify cares very little about what its customers actually want or need, it simply pushes out updates that are going to funnel more money into their business. Prove me wrong!

Yes, if you either edit the order and mouse over the product to add a discount, or cancel the order and duplicate it with a draft order
