Change default address used by email marketing

Topic summary

Users are encountering an issue where Shopify automatically uses their billing address (often a personal home address) in the footer of marketing emails, creating privacy concerns.

Current Workaround:

  • Manually edit each email template through Settings > Notifications
  • Locate and replace the billing address in the HTML editor footer section
  • Changes must be applied individually to every template

User Frustration:

  • No simple toggle or checkbox exists to designate a “public-facing” address
  • The lack of a global setting is viewed as a significant functionality gap
  • One user reported accidentally exposing a high-profile client’s home address due to this default behavior

Status: The issue remains unresolved with no native solution available. Multiple users confirm experiencing the same problem, expressing frustration that this oversight persists without an efficient fix.

Shopify keeps wanting to use my billing address as the location used in the footer of marketing emails, which is my personal home address so I don’t want it appearing for obvious reasons. I’ve added a second address and set it to default. However, Shopify is still using my billing address - is there anyway to fix this other than manually removing it from any email I send and manually adding in the other address?

To prevent Shopify from using your billing address in the footer of marketing emails, you can manually edit the email templates. Go to your Shopify admin, then to ‘Settings’ > ‘Notifications’. Choose the email template you want to change, like ‘Order Confirmation’, and find the footer section in the HTML editor. Here, you can manually replace or remove the billing address. Remember to save your changes. This adjustment will need to be made for each email template where your address appears.

Thanks for the suggestion. I was hoping for a “use this as the mailing address on emails” checkbox type of solution rather than having to edit every template we use. It seems like a bit of a gap in Shopify’s email functionality.

I am having the same issue too. Seems like an oversight that we can’t have a “public facing” address.

Can’t believe this is still an issue in 2025. Having your billing(home) address exposed by default without any way to click change it across all templates is a major oversight. Just had a co-worker send an email with a high profile clients home address in the footer because of this.
