Charging for 1099-k access

Topic summary

Multiple users report being unable to access their 1099-K tax forms after closing their Shopify stores without paying to reopen them. The original poster notes this practice may be illegal and received a promise from chat support to escalate the issue, but received no follow-up after a week.

Key Issues:

  • Closed stores cannot access tax documents without paying reactivation fees
  • Promised 1099-K emails never arrive
  • Links to past tax papers generate 404 errors
  • Traditional support email (support@shopify.com) no longer accepts incoming messages

Resolution Path:
One user successfully obtained their 1099-K by contacting support directly via email. Shopify reportedly acknowledged the practice was not legal and sent the document. However, other users struggle to find working contact methods, as the standard support email now auto-rejects messages and directs users to the Help Center for ticket creation.

The discussion remains partially unresolved, with users seeking clarification on how to properly contact Shopify support for tax document access.

I cannot access my 1099-k without paying to reopen my store. I’ve been told this practice is not legal. I spoke with chat support who promised to escalate and I would be emailed. It’s been over a week with no follow up. Is anyone else dealing with this issue?

Hi @nicole909812308

I’m sorry to hear you’re facing this frustrating situation. Accessing your 1099-K should not require paying to reopen your store, and you’re correct that this practice doesn’t align with legal requirements. Since Shopify support hasn’t followed up, I recommend escalating the issue further by contacting Shopify’s Billing or Legal Support team directly. You can also reach out via email (support@shopify.com) or social media channels for a quicker response. In the meantime, keep records of your communications in case you need to reference them later.

I am also trying to reach Shopify support regarding 1099-K issues and the email address you give does not work! When you send an email, it instantly generates the following auto-reply:

Thanks for contacting Shopify Support!

I’m having this exact same problem. I was told that I would be emailed a copy of my 1099 when it was available even though I had closed my store already. No 1099 in my email, ever. And can’t access past tax papers when I log in to Shopify even though it says I can. I receive a 404 error page when I click on the link. I already spoke to support but its been a few days and still nothing.

I am also having the same problem.

I was finally able to have it emailed to me. They admitted it was not legal for them to not give access to it. Email support directly and they should be able to send it.

How do you email support? All of the email addresses I have tried for Shopify generate an auto-reply saying the address is inactive and they no longer accept incoming emails.
