I’d be happy to provide further insight into your question. In short, Automatic Discounts cannot be used with Customer Segments. The reasoning for this is quite simple being, automatic discounts are just that - automatically applied regardless of customer.
A discount code, however, works in conjunction with a Customer Segment (if specified) meaning it will only work and apply if the customer meets such criteria. This is upon manually entering a code, whereas, automatic will not have this requirement.

I have the same issue, and it’s very frustrating that you can not use Automatic discounts with Customer Segments. BUT I’m sure they have an app for this that charges a monthly fee

I would like to say that every customer I have demand this feature!
Its absolutely mandatory when you have any kind of membership club and would like to give them automatic discount and not a coupon.
And if other apps can do that and its already part of the admin interface, and it takes 1-2 day to develop (with testing), why its not already published to use?
Hi there, the reasoning does not quite make sense, since we may not necessarily want the automatic discount to be applied to all customers. We should have the possibility to make it automatic only for a privileged group of customers. Hope this is taken in consideration
This continues to be a very requested feature and I continue to be disappointed that this doesn’t work out of the box. It’s time Shopify starts supporting it’s user base and not the app developers that are patching holes the core system leaves open. Frankly, I am getting frustrated paying over $140 a month in fees to make shopify work well for my business AND forking over the inflated CC processing fees at the same time. This feature has been requested for over 4 years based on what the forums history says across threads… time to get it together.
