Deactivated store but need to cancel auto renew of domain

Topic summary

A user deactivated their Shopify store but received a notification about domain auto-renewal in 30 days. They cannot access their account to check or modify domain settings without reactivating the store and incurring charges.

Suggested solutions include:

  • Contacting Shopify Support directly to verify auto-renewal status and request cancellation without store reactivation
  • Attempting account recovery via “Forgot password?” to access domain settings
  • Transferring the domain to another registrar (GoDaddy, Namecheap) for independent management
  • Setting reminders before the renewal date as a fallback

Current status:

  • Multiple users report experiencing this same issue
  • One user is struggling to find how to contact Shopify Support
  • Another user cannot locate the settings tab after logging in and is unsure whether their domain is with Shopify or a third-party registrar

The discussion remains unresolved with no confirmed solution or official Shopify response provided.

I have deactivated my shopify store, however I have been notified that my domain may auto renew in 30 days. I cannot login to check to see if my domain will auto renew despite my store being deactivated. I Do not wish to reactivate my store and pay money to go further to check this. Can someone please let me know how I can avoid any unnecessary costs to ensure I won’t be charged for something I do not require. Thanks.

Hi @P_11_1

To prevent your domain from auto-renewing without having to reactivate your Shopify store, you can take the following steps:

1. Domain Management: If your domain was purchased through Shopify, you won’t be able to manage your domain settings directly once your store is deactivated. However, if it’s possible to recover your account temporarily, you could do that to access your domain settings.

2. Contact Shopify Support: Reach out to Shopify support directly. Explain your situation and ask them to verify whether the domain is set to auto-renew and if they can cancel the renewal for you. They might be able to assist you without needing to reactivate your store.

3. Domain Transfer: If your domain allows for it and you want to keep it, consider transferring it to another registrar (like GoDaddy or Namecheap) where you can fully manage the settings and avoid auto-renew charges from Shopify.

4. Account Recovery: If you just want to check your domain settings, you might try recovering your Shopify account using the “Forgot password?” feature. Once you regain access, you can check the domain settings.

5. Set Reminders: If you can’t manage the situation immediately, set a reminder to check again just before the auto-renew date. This will give you a final opportunity to manage the domain.

Taking these steps should help you avoid any unnecessary costs associated with your domain.

Let me know if you need more detailed information on any part!

Thank you.

Hello,

I am in the same absurd situation. Can you please elaborate on solution 2 you suggested? “Contact Shopify Support” Because so far I am investigating very hard to understand how to contact this “Support” that should help me.

Thank you!

I am in the same situation and received the same email. I logged into my account but unable to see the settings tab. Also, I am not sure if the domain was with Shopify or a 3rd party.
