Hi I am trying to set a collection as a button but each time I do it, I am taken to a 404 page. I have buttons on my homepage that are intended to be linked to other pages but they never do. Sometime it’ll work but other times it just brings back the 404 error. If you go to the website https://virtual-skin-care.myshopify.com/ and try to click one of the boxes on the homepage under the video section a 404 occurs.
Hi, @blakelower !
My name is Lilith, I’m on the Social Care team at Shopify. Thanks for providing that link to your store, this helps me see what you’re seeing on the storefront.
I tested out the issue that you’re experiencing and it looks like there is a lag time in the link being defined because if one hovers over the box for a few seconds to wait, then the link will work, but immediately clicking the box as soon as you see the box seems to get me to a 404 page.
I also see that the intended links match the collection links as well so there shouldn’t be a 404 page showing up. So let’s do a bit of troubleshooting so we can refine what the problem might be.
A few things that you can tell me here that will help me determine your next steps:
1. What theme are you using?
2. What version of the theme are you using (number)?
3. Have you or anyone else incorporated some changes to the code in your theme?
4. How did you add the links to the collections in the box section?
5. Are you using any apps to edit the homepage?
6. Has this issue been there since the start or after a specific date?
7. When did this issue start happening?
Because it’s not clear right away what the issue is, the additional information will be helpful in us diagnosing the situation a bit better and recommending your next steps. I do however recommend speaking with our live support team if you’re using a Shopify-built theme (free themes only) and if you’re needing urgent assistance on this. When reaching out to the live support team be sure to have all of the 7 questions above answered fully so that they can get to the root of the situation more easily. If you’re using a third-party theme, they may be able to help out if their company supports this type of issue.
Along the lines of the theme and its function. I wanted to also include a link to our accessibility guide to help you ensure that your site is accessible to all visitors. There are some visuals such as the gold button gradients against the current backgrounds that may need to be adjusted a little bit so that those unable to distinguish the color differences can navigate your site easily.
Color and visuals are important for accessibility, but also for your brand identity. Keeping things consistent will definitely also be a great thing for building an increased level of trust as well as easy navigation for your visitors.
Let me know how you do with the information above! I’m happy to answer any questions you think of as you work on your business.

Thank you for gathering that info for me @blakelower ! Since the theme is made by a partner and not Shopify, we can try to troubleshoot and find the source of where the issue is coming from, however, our team won’t be able to look into your theme as we can’t dive into a 3rd party theme in detail.
Let’s try a few things!
The first thing you can do is to make a copy of that theme so you can have a backup just in case. Follow the steps in our Help Center doc for backing up your theme.
Once you’ve done that, you’re going to roll back some code to see when that issue started and what addition could have caused it. Because you edited the code before you’ll know which files to view and rollback. The steps to roll the code back can be found in our Help Center. This will give you the opportunity to select any saved version from before. Roll it back to approximately the time that you started seeing this 404 issue begin and save the file.
Refresh your page or view it in a private browsing window to avoid cookies and old cache data. When you roll back the added code that is causing the link issue, you’ll see that the links will work fine. This is where you want to check on what the snippet was that you added.
As an alternative, you can reach out to Pixel Union through the theme store’s contact options for this developer. In most cases, the developer can help with some issues if they came from the theme, but if you have some custom code you may find that you’ll need to engage a Shopify Expert to assist in more detail to dig into your code in the theme settings and fix this for you. I highly recommend hiring one of our partners to help you with this. You can find a suitable Shopify Partner in the Experts Marketplace or request a quote by following this guide here.
