As title explains, the myshopify domain is taken when I try to change it in settings > domains > “change to a new myshopify.com domain”, but when I enter the url in the browser it says “This store does not exist.”
Im also having a really hard time accepting the fact that the myshopify domain is taken since I could get the normal domain without any issues. It just seems highly unlikely to me so im asking here for help, maybe someone from shopify that sees it and can look into it?
Hey, I understand the confusion. The myshopify.com domains work a bit differently from custom domains. Even if a store is no longer active, once a myshopify.com URL has been claimed, it can’t be reused or reassigned to another store. That’s why you’re seeing it as unavailable, even though visiting it shows ‘This store does not exist.’
You’ll need to choose a different myshopify.com subdomain. The good news is that this won’t affect your actual storefront since customers will only see your primary domain (e.g., caselier.com) once you connect it. The myshopify.com domain is mostly for the backend and store identification.
If it was taken by someone it cannot be reassigned to you. Doesn’t matter what you see in the browser when you go to the website. That domain has been claimed, so you just need to pick a different domain name.
If you see that the subdomain is already taken or in use when trying to update, your option will be to use a different domain.
It’s like when you try to create a username that someone else already has; it can’t be assigned twice for security reasons. I even recommend my clients use prefixes like store-subdomain.myshopify.com because often Shopify subdomain names have already been chosen.
Also, I encountered a client who, for professional reasons, didn’t want the random Shopify domain to appear, so I told him to log in with domain.com/admin to look more professional.
