Need to get my domain website traffic sent to Shopify. It is doing the reverse now

Topic summary

A small business owner is experiencing a domain routing issue: traffic to their Shopify store is being redirected to their Squarespace domain (which has no content), when they want the opposite—their Squarespace domain to point to their Shopify store.

Root cause: The domain connection is configured backward.

Recommended solution:

  1. In Shopify: Go to Settings > Domains, connect the existing Squarespace domain, and set it as the Primary Domain
  2. In Squarespace: Access DNS Settings and update two records:
    • A record (Host: @) → point to Shopify’s IP 23.227.38.65
    • CNAME record (Host: www) → point to shops.myshopify.com
  3. Return to Shopify and verify the connection

Timeline: DNS changes can take a few hours to propagate.

Multiple respondents suggest hiring someone tech-savvy to handle the setup, given the user’s self-described limited technical experience. A step-by-step video tutorial was also shared as a visual guide.

I am trying to set up my new small business website. I have a domain name already. That is from square space. I was trying to divert all my traffic that goes to that page to my Spotify page. Instead after following the directions closely (I thought) I have it the opposite way. Traffic to my Shopify account is being diverted to my company’s domain website which I don’t have anything there. How can I switch this? Thank you. I am very technology handicapped so please use small words and put in ways I can understand. Thank you!

Why not allow someone that’s tech-savvy handle it and save you tons of headaches

Hi @user1665

Let’s think of this in a simpler way. Your domain name from Squarespace is your business’s permanent address, and your Shopify website is your new, fully-stocked storefront. The problem is that your address is currently pointing to an empty lot instead of your new shop. We just need to give your address the new directions to point everyone to the right place.

First, do a quick check-in at your Shopify store by going to Settings and then Domains to make sure your custom address (like yourcompany.com) is set as the “Primary domain.”

The main step, however, is in your Squarespace account. Log in to Squarespace and find the control panel for your domain, which is called “DNS Settings.” You only need to check or change two lines there. Find the line that has a @ symbol as its Host, and make sure the box next to it (often called Data or Points To) has the number 23.227.38.65 in it. Then, find the line with www as its Host, and make sure the box next to it has the phrase shops.myshopify.com in it.

Once you save those two changes in Squarespace, your work is done. Think of it like sending a change-of-address form to the post office for the entire internet, it can take a few hours for everyone to get the update.

Just be a little patient, and soon your business address will lead all your visitors right to the front door of your new Shopify store.

Hope this helps!

Hey @user1665,

Thanks for the deeply explanation. I will try to explain it in simple words as I can. Right now what is happening is:

  • Your Shopify Traffic is going to Squarespace.
  • But what you want is: your squarespace domain (example.com) should show your Shopify store.

This happens because the ‘domain connection‘ is setup backward. Let’s fix it for you!

Step 1: Decide where you want your website to live

You want Shopify to be your main website, and you domain name should point to Shopify.

Step 2: Login to Shopify.

  • Go to your Shopify Admin.
  • On the left side, click settings.
  • Click Domains.
  • Click connect existing domain.
  • Type in your domain name (the one you bought on Squarespace).
  • Shopify will show you DNS settings you need to update in squarespace.

Step 3:

  • Login to your squarespace account.
  • Go to Domains and click your domain name.
  • Find DNS settings,
  • Update these two records –> A record and CNAME record.

Step 4: Back in Shopify.

  • Go back to Shopify >> Settings >> Domains.
  • Click verify connection.
  • It can take a few minutes to connect with your squarespace domain to Shopify.

Step 5: Make Shopify the main Website:

  • In Shopify –> Settings –> Domains, choose your squarespace domain name as the Primary Domain.
  • Now, whenever someon types your domain name, it will show your Shopify store.

Or you can watch this step by step tutorial video on how to connect squarespace domain to shopify.

Sounds like your domain settings just need a quick fix. Right now your traffic is looping the wrong way. Here’s the simple version:

  1. Log in to Squarespace (where your domain is).

  2. Find your Domain Settings > DNS Settings.

  3. You want to make sure your A record points to Shopify’s IP

  4. Also add or edit the CNAME record for “www” to point to shops.myshopify.com.

  5. Then, go back into your Shopify admin > Domains and click Verify connection.

This tells the internet: “send all traffic for mydomain.com to Shopify,” not the other way around.

If you don’t see those DNS settings in Squarespace, search “manage custom DNS records” in your Squarespace help. Once you update, it can take a few hours for changes to go live.

Honestly, it’s better you find some one tech-savvy handles this, so you can focus on the operation things.
