Sender email

I have a domain name but am told I cannot use it for sender email.. why not?

A domain name is not the same as an email. You have to buy the email hosting as a separate product. If your domain is from a third party such as GoDaddy, you can also purchase the email from them. Usually businesses buy a domain/email bundle. If the domain is from Shopify though, you don’t have that option because Shopify doesn’t do email hosting.

After getting the email package, you can verify it and authenticate the email in Shopify Settings.

Hey @clothesicreate

Quick clarification to add to @Maximus3: you don’t actually need to buy email hosting just to use your domain as the sender address, that’s only needed if you want to receive replies at it. To send from it, the domain just has to be authenticated, and “can’t use it for sender email” almost always means it isn’t authenticated yet, not that it’s impossible. Go to Settings, Notifications, and in the Sender email section enter your address (like info@yourdomain.com) and click Authenticate your domain.

If your domain is on GoDaddy, Cloudflare or IONOS, or you bought it through Shopify, it can authenticate automatically in one click. Otherwise Shopify gives you a few CNAME records plus a DMARC record to add at your DNS provider, and it verifies within about 48 hours. The only real requirement is being able to edit the domain’s DNS, so if you can’t get into that, that’s your actual blocker. Once it’s authenticated, your emails go out from your own domain instead of showing as via shopifyemail.com.

Hope that helps! If it did, a Like and Marking it as Solution goes a long way and helps others find the fix faster too.

Best,
Moeed

Usually, having a domain name alone isn’t enough for a sender email. You also need an actual email mailbox or email hosting attached to that domain (for example, hello@yourdomain.com) plus proper DNS records like SPF, DKIM, and sometimes DMARC to verify you own it.

A common issue is people buy a domain but don’t set up email hosting, so platforms reject it as a sender address. Also, some services block certain domains if they’re not authenticated yet to prevent spam.

Reason why people are suggesting you that is to maintain your main domain’s reputation. If you are doinge one-to-one communications using your domain’s email user@domain.com is ok - here you are sure the other person won’t mark you as spam. But, if you are sending to unknown people, your should do that with a different look-alike domain or a sub-domain like user@domainapp.com

hello there @clothesicreate
In Shopify you can’t use just a domain as a sender email until it is verified and authenticated. This is a deliverability protection to avoid spoofing and help emails land in inbox instead of spam box.

One easy workaround is use your domain with a mail provider, such as Google Workspace, or any other email host, and send emails with that authenticated addresss. Ensure your domain is verified in your email settings and is false-compliant-correctly configured for sending before using it in Shopify notifications or marketing.
