Shipping Profiles - Large Letter vs Parcel Sum

Really struggling with this one. I am moving my store from WooCommerce to Shopify and for the life of me I cannot get shipping working in a way that is useful.

We sell a range of items, some items will go out as large letter and some will go out as a small parcel. We get a fair few orders where they order a large letter item and a small parcel. If I use profiles it sums up both the large letter and the parcel price which of course is incorrect as they both will go in the same parcel.

How would I have the highest price take place rather than a sum of two? Even struggling with apps to combat this as a lot of them require a advanced plan to take advantage of the “third-party calculated rates” which at £259 a month is not even an option then other apps want to charge a ridiculous price for what I would class as core functionality.

When employing multiple shipping profiles, the shipping rates will be combined when products from various profiles are added to the cart.

Unfortunately, there is no workaround for this.

As an alternative, you may want to contemplate utilizing a single profile and implementing weight slabs to establish the shipping rates.

Weight alone would not work due to some items being more dense so weigh more but still go out in a large letter format.

Just baffles me that Shopify works in this way, it could actually be a deal breaker as I cannot effectively charge customers correct postage.

Your choices are limited as CCS is not enabled on your plan, and you prefer not to utilize apps.

Please contemplate offering an estimated rate at checkout rather than an exact rate. When inputting product weight, you have the flexibility to use either volumetric weight or actual weight, choosing the higher of the two.

Not ruling out an app, just unwilling to spend a large sum for this functionality as I am a small business. So far the few that have the functionality require CCS which is only available on the largest plan.
