I have an unsually high amount of traffic coming from a desktop in Germany Saxony Falkenstein. They are landing on my product pages with no adding to basket or conversions.
I do not and have never sold my products online to anyone in Germany so this is definitely not normal.
Any advise would be much appreciated. Is there anything i might be able to do to deter this traffic?
We’ve suddenly had the exact same thing today. Huge traffic numbers coming from Germany Saxony Falkenstein (we don’t even sell to Germany), it be great if someone from Shopify could look in this.
No. I’ve not received a response from anyone in shopify yet. I’m chasing up with my domain hosts too. If i get anywhere I’ll share here.
I have removed Germany from my markets since yesterday but this hasn’t seemed to stop the traffic. I have got firewalls, etc in place but this also isn’t stopping this traffic.
It sounds like you may be dealing with some suspicious or possibly bot-driven traffic. High traffic from a specific, unexpected region with no conversions can often indicate bots or click farms trying to scrape data or manipulate analytics. Here are a few suggestions to help deter this traffic:
Check for Bot Traffic: You can review your Google Analytics data to see if there are unusual patterns such as high bounce rates, low session duration, or visits from unknown IPs. This can help you identify suspicious activity. Bots may use specific user agents or even fake locations to simulate traffic.
Use a CAPTCHA: To prevent bots from interacting with your site, you can set up CAPTCHA protection on certain forms like your checkout page, contact form, or even pop-up forms. This will ensure that only real customers can submit information.
Block Specific Regions: If you’re sure that the traffic from Germany is unwanted, you can block or limit traffic from that region using Shopify apps or by configuring your settings in your analytics tool. This will help prevent the traffic from hitting your product pages.
Use a Fraud Protection App: Apps like Shopify’s Fraud Filter or third-party apps that focus on identifying suspicious activity can help prevent fraudulent signups or purchases from suspicious regions.
Monitor Analytics for Patterns: After taking some actions, keep an eye on your traffic patterns. If you see a drop in traffic from this area but an increase in quality traffic, you’ll know you’ve successfully filtered out the bots.
Gameball can help by allowing you to track genuine customer activity and reward real engagement, helping you focus on building a loyal customer base rather than worrying about bot-driven interactions.
I understand your concern about the unusual traffic, especially when it’s not leading to any conversions ? Here are a few things you can do to help address this issue based on our experience:
First, try to do IP Blocking or Geo-Restrictions. You may consider setting up IP blocks or geo-restrictions to limit traffic from regions where you don’t normally receive sales. Shopify and various apps offer this functionality, which might help in preventing non-converting traffic from regions outside your target audience. Then, you need to set up Google Analytics to monitor and analyze this traffic in more detail. You’ll be able to view session behavior, referral sources, and other useful insights that might help determine if this traffic is potentially harmful or spam-like.
If this traffic could represent legitimate interest in your products, you could leverage our app, Ako Retargeting. By running retargeting ads, you could remind interested visitors to complete a purchase, potentially converting this traffic into actual sales. Our app offers tools for retargeting ads on multiple platforms, which will help improve conversions from these visits. Additionally, you could implement a loyalty program to engage and encourage repeat customers. Our loyalty app, Ako loyalty, has features that can offer incentives for actions like repeat visits, sign-ups, and purchases. While this may not directly reduce non-converting traffic, it could enhance the customer experience for visitors genuinely interested in your products and encourage them to return with the intent to purchase.
Hopefully, these steps help you manage and make the most of the unusual traffic you’re seeing. Please let me know if you need more information on setting up any of these suggestions!
I’m getting the same. 3000+ sessions from Falkenstein, just today. every collection page in my store is being systematically landed on. I have no idea why. There has been some traffic from this specific location every day for a few weeks now but today it’s gone crazy. It’s not slowing down at all, been the same all day.
Exact same problem for us, Falkenstein Germany during BFCM weekend, it’s really annoying because it distorts conversion rate % hugely. No need for a bot to have 4800 sessions on my website?! Why is that happening?
Currently happening to our site just now, over the past 3 days, continuously, they land for like 4 seconds and then back off. Only landing on product pages.
All coming from different IP addresses, so definitely a bot of some sort. I have tried blocking the traffic but Shopify are still counting it in analytics. Will reach out to them and see if they can do anything.
Let me know if anyone has managed to sort this issue.
Hi this has been happening to my store since Friday at first I thought finally my website is getting views but now they are getting out of hand. I’ve had over 600 views today alone. I’ve been in touch with shopify and they are going to report to the analysts but at shopify they have checked all my account and shop and there is no issues showing. I’m so confused with what’s going on with it and what they are doing in Germany as I stopped selling to them in December.
This issue remains ongoing. We generally receive 3k views each month. In the last 3 days we have had 11K views all from Germany. Its frustrating. Its affecting our app usage with different apps. C’mon shopify. This is a big problem
So i have managed to find a solution that has so far worked since my post earlier today. I use an app on shopify app market called Blockify. I pay for the enterprise plan per month. That allows you to block ISP. You then block ISP from germany and source - Hetzner Online GmbH
This seems to have done the trick as iv not had any of that traffic visit my site since earlier today when i made that change!
I had 3 days of bot traffic from Falkenstein Germany. Approx 11k sessions over the 3 days. Its crazy. Really distorting figures and eating into apps that charge by session. This issue seems to be a reoccurring issue with shopify stores but they are failing to acknowledge there is a problem.
I downloaded blockify app and blocked all traffic from Falkenstein Germany. It definitely stopped the traffic from this location but we are still getting bot traffic and many add to carts throughout the day. Its hard to identify and block these bots.
