Updating shipping address WITHOUT changing billing address

Every so often we need to change the shipping address on an order for example where parents are buying furniture to be shipped to children who are no longer at home or when they are buying things for an impending house move.

Where a customer has specified different shipping and billing addresses during checkout, I can edit either of them without affected the other one.

Where a customer has only specified one address, the order page shows the shipping address and says “Billing Address: Same as shipping address”.

If I make an edit to the shipping address it also changes the billing address. This is an issue as the billing address is verified during the checkout by the card provider so we are showing unverified addresses as verified which runs the risk of issues if anyone raises a chargeback.

As an example, this morning a customer has asked us to send the goods to a shipping company for forwarding to an offshore address. I have changed the shipping address but it now shows the billing address as being that of the shipping company. It will not allow me the option to change the billing address as it still says “same as shipping address.”

I am editing them using the pen icon in Shopify rather than using any third party app.

Thanks for raising this. It seems like this might be a display issue after editing the addresses. When you change the shipping address using the pen icon, the original billing address should stay as it was, even if it initially shows “same as shipping address.”

Once you’ve made the change, try refreshing the page. You should see that the billing address still reflects the previous shipping address, while the new shipping address updates as intended.
