Can I offer multi-currency gift cards on Shopify?

I sell internationally. How do I make sure gift cards are issued and redeemed in the customer’s local currency?

Hey! @William96 ,

Shopify gift cards are always issued and redeemed in your store’s base currency, not in the customer’s local currency — even if you use a currency converter for product prices. To handle this for international customers, clearly communicate at checkout that the gift card value is fixed in your store’s default currency, and consider using an app or Shopify Markets features to manage multi-currency support more smoothly, but full multi-currency gift card redemption isn’t natively supported yet.

Shopify’s Built-in Multi-Currency: Shopify Payments includes automatic currency conversion using current market exchange rates. You can also set exchange rates manually and customize pricing for different markets through your international sales tools.

@William96

By using Shopify Payments and Shopify Markets, it is possible for you to provide gift cards which support different currencies on Shopify.

The customers will have the freedom of buying as well as making payments in their local currencies through this way. In your store’s currency, gift card values are kept but they will be converted during purchase or redemption at an exchange rate.

To guarantee everything runs smoothly, turn on the currency selector on Shopify Markets and never use fixed prices for international gift cards.

@William96 Shopify gift cards are always issued and redeemed in your store’s base currency, not the customer’s local currency. Unfortunately, Shopify doesn’t currently support multi-currency gift card issuing or redemption out of the box even if you’re using Shopify Markets.

Shopify gift cards are issued and redeemed in your store’s base currency. When a customer redeems a gift card, the amount is converted from your store’s currency to the customer’s local currency using the exchange rate at the time of redemption.

You can enable a currency selector that allows customers to view prices in their local currency. You can add it manually or use apps.

Remember, it’s crucial to tell international customers that gift cards are valued in your store’s base currency and that currency conversion will occur during redemption.

Richard from 99minds Gift Card & Loyalty here!

Shopify’s native gift card system is limited when it comes to multi-currency support, so if you sell internationally it can be tricky to issue and redeem cards in a customer’s local currency.

With the 99minds Multi-Currency Gift Card solution, you can create gift cards in multiple currencies and ensure they’re redeemed in the currency that matches your customer’s location. This works seamlessly across Shopify and Shopify Plus, so your global shoppers get a smooth and localized gifting experience.

If you’d like, I can share how some of our international merchants have set this up successfully.

Hey @William96 - not sure if this is still something you’re looking for, but I just saw that the Givy app offers a solution that’s about as close to real multi-currency gift cards as you can get without having multiple Shopify stores.

App listing is Givy → Gift Cards & Gifts - Gift cards, product and subscription gifting for Shopify | Shopify App Store - hope this helps, I found it so frustrating that Shopify doesn’t offer this natively, and just using Markets is not a good customer experience.

Good luck!

Chris
