How can I manage multicurrency gift cards to avoid customer confusion?

We have multicurrency deployed and also have some pricing variation in play market dependent.

As an example, we sell in Euros to the EU, £ to the UK and $ to the US.
The UK is our base currency/market.
For the EU we reduce prices by 10%
For the US we mark prices up by 20% (to align with our stockists in the country)

With sales of giftcards, we see that they are subject to the same currency conversion and pricing rules.
This is confusing for the customer as we sell gift cards in UK denominations (at present) so the conf email shows a value that is hard to comprehend for the customer, eg a gift card with a £ value of 150 purchased by a customer in the EU, will cost E 160.65 after conversions and adjustments. When the customer receives the confirmation, it shows a £ value, which happens to be £140.77 in this scenario.

What is a good solution to this challenge?

Can we offer gift cards in multiple currencies or is there another way to better manage this?

We have the same issue. I can’t believe that Shopify does not have a good solution to this. I am currently trying to find a 3p app that will help. No luck so far

Anyone got a solution for this as with Christmas coming (and we use Shopify Markets) it would be great to be able to sell Gift Cards in local currency - ie £100, $100, €100 etc etc

We have the same problem at Galvin Green, is there a solution in the near for this Shopify?

Hello to @UW , @galvinrikard , @RobertCroydon , and @CoreFabrics

Just letting you know that the Givy app has solved the frustrating issue of not being able to actually sell multi-currency gift cards on Shopify.

Here’s the customer experience with Givy:

  • They see gift card denominations in their selected currency (ie. $100USD for US, €100EUR for Europe)
  • They pay in the currency they selected
  • All notifications are sent using the currency they selected
  • The ‘check balance’ page shows the balance in their currency
  • The gift card’s balance gets updated every hour based on currency conversions
  • The customer spends the gift card in the currency they selected

It’s a great way to actually offer gift cards in multiple currencies while still dealing with Shopify’s limitation that all cards on your store are created in the default currency.

App is at Givy → Gift Cards & Gifts - Gift cards, product and subscription gifting for Shopify | Shopify App Store

Hope this is helpful, we’re really excited to finally have this solved.

While the Givy solution sounds great, it’s sadly expensive both monthly and %age wise to a degree that I’ve not suggested people use it yet. Sounds interesting though.

Hi @MCB_KBJ - sorry to hear that you feel a $14 monthly charge is too expensive. Considering the app not only solves a huge problem for international merchants, plus offers an amazing gifting experience for gift cards, products, and subscriptions, we feel it’s a fair price.

As I’m sure you’re aware, a fairly large percentage of gift cards are never redeemed, which more than offsets any fees for the app.

Hope you’ll suggest us to some of your merchants and let them decide if it’s a worthwhile cost. I can say for certain that many merchants already think so.

Take care!

JP

As brand is important, I would never go for the 15 usd one, but the 50 usd one to get the custom domain. So, 50USD and 1,5% fee.

Also, I don’t see this app fixing one of the most important issue with multi-currency setups.
As you say “The gift card’s balance gets updated every hour based on currency conversions“, this will mean a dad can buy their child a gift card for 100 euro, but if the stores main currency is in Danish kr. their balance will go up and down. It’s a hard day for a customer service representative when they have to explain why their 100euro gift card is now only 99.8 Euro worth.

I appreciate the feedback.

Not sure what you mean about a custom domain, all plans allow merchants to connect their domain for outbound emails, we don’t feature-gate anything to do with domains.

Also, you’re misunderstanding what we mean about updating the balance every hour. If a dad buys their child a gift card for 100 euro, and the store’s currency is Danish kr, we update the balance of the gift card every hour so that the child always gets at least 100 euro. Recipients will never get less than they paid for. That’s the whole reason we update the gift card balances, so that customers don’t experience exactly what you’re describing.

Have a good one.

Good to hear about the updating of the balance. It’s really not clear from your site or your above description.

Also, “Send Emails from Your Own Domain” is grayed out on your own price comparison chart on your own website. The app store however says somethign different, so perhaps align there

Thanks for the responses. it’s appreciated.

Thanks for catching that on our website - it’s been updated!

Hope you’ll consider Givy in the future.
