But it seems to be outdated, since there is no “Automatic Discount” option at Discounts any more. It asks to choose a specific discount type, and when I choose “free shipping”, it just offers me to create only a manual coupon code discount with the discount code being mandatory.
That’s a great question and idea! Offering free shipping is a common business and marketing practice, because it reassures customers that they won’t be charged a surprise high shipping fee when they place their orders.
Free shipping discounts never automatically apply to an order. Your customers need to enter the code during checkout to receive the discount. To automatically offer your customers free shipping based on their order price, you must set a free shipping rate. Set a free shipping rate under the Shipping and Delivery page in your Shopify admin. This applies to all orders that meet the free shipping criteria that you’ve set.
Hi Iris, what if free shipping is only offered to a certain customer segment and I don’t want to bother these customers to enter codes? It doesn’t make sense not to allow “automatic” on shipping discount type with certain customer segment selected.
In my store, I have both wholesale customers and retail consumers. I need to offer free shipping to retail consumers but not to wholesale ones. They both can access all products. Wholesale customers are tagged while consumers are not tagged. The shipping & delivery rate setting doesn’t allow me to select customer segment or customer tag either.
I know i can find a 3rd pty app that may meet my need, but i prefer shopify default functionalities than 3rd pty apps. If shopify can allow “automatic” on free shipping discount type, I can save my time without searching for the ideal app and testing, etc.
Hello, I have free shipping setup under Shipping and Delivery. But when our customer use their 20% off discount the free shipping is turned OFF (with a message saying, “the shipping was updated”) and forces the customer to pay the shipping. I need both of the discounts to apply, but I don’t see a way to do that.
It is difficult to pinpoint the cause of the issue here without accessing your account and reviewing all the settings. However, it sounds like once your discount is applied, the total amount goes below the minimum $ value to avail a free shipping.
So for example, let’s say you’re providing free shipping to orders that have minimum value of $20. Total cart value before discount is $21 which means it does qualify for free shipping. However, discount code is being applied on the checkout and if 20% discount reduces cart value close to $15, then free shipping conditions are not met.
