Selling in multiple currencies from India

Topic summary

A merchant in India is encountering currency conversion issues when attempting to sell to both Indian and US markets. The store is configured in INR, but when US customers proceed to checkout, prices revert from USD back to INR despite using a currency converter.

Root cause identified:

  • Seamless multi-currency checkout requires Shopify Payments with USD as the default currency
  • Shopify Payments does not support INR, creating a technical limitation
  • Merchants can only select one store currency without Shopify Payments support

Business impact:

  • One merchant reports Google suspended their store for “misrepresentation” after adding the US region, likely due to currency display inconsistencies
  • Switching the entire store to USD would alienate the Indian customer base, who prefer INR pricing

Current status: The issue remains unresolved with no viable workaround presented. Multiple merchants are seeking solutions from Shopify to enable true multi-currency selling from India without sacrificing their domestic market.

Hello: I have hit a very interesting unsolved issue.

My store is set up in INR. I wanted to start selling in USA.

I add USA market and put a currency convertor. Price on the page reflect in USD when site opens in USA.

However when user goes to check out, it again shows currency in INR.

Looking further, it seems seamless checkout is supported only if shopify payments is used and default currency is USD.

Now shopify payments does not support INR as currency.

Shopify claims that you can build store in India that can sell in USD but that claim is not true.

Can anyone clarify above as I am planning to expand my products as well as region.

Thanks in advance
Himanshu

Hi @himanshukhona !

That is correct. You can sell in India using USD however, since multi-currency is not available because India is not supported by Shopify payments, you can only choose one currency that you will use to your store. You can change your currency by going to >settings >general >store currency.

Hello Shopify, i am also facing the similar issue. This is really impacting the business plan. Google has also suspended my store for misrepresentation after i introduced US as a region (due to this currency misrepresentation i think). Can you provide some solution for this issue please, else all our efforts are getting wasted.

Hi @SealSubs-Roan , The majority of the people in India will not buy in USD , so the solution will impact the India market significantly. @himanshukhona , hope you agree.
