Would AI-Powered Abandoned Cart Recovery via Email & SMS Help Your Store?

Hey Shopify merchants,

I’m working on an AI-powered abandoned cart recovery tool that helps Shopify store owners automatically bring back lost sales using email and SMS follow-ups. The goal is to recover abandoned carts more effectively and boost conversions without manual effort.

How It Works

Smart Cart Detection – Identifies when a customer adds items to their cart but doesn’t complete the purchase.

Automated Follow-Ups – Sends personalized email and SMS reminders at optimal times to encourage customers to return.

Incentive-Based Recovery – Option to include discount codes, free shipping, or limited-time offers to increase conversion rates.

Behavior-Based Messaging – Tailors messages based on customer history, such as past purchases or time spent on the site.

Performance Tracking – Provides analytics on recovered sales, open rates, and conversion rates to optimize future campaigns.

Questions for You
1 Do you currently use abandoned cart recovery emails or SMS? If so, how effective have they been?

2 Would an AI-driven approach that automates and optimizes follow-ups be helpful for your store?

3 What type of messaging or incentives do you think work best to bring customers back?

I’d love to hear your thoughts and feedback—this will help refine the tool to better serve Shopify store owners!

Thanks,

EcomBot-Pro Dev.

sounds interesting. what would it really do beyond what the current abandoned checkout recovery does?

the issue is with abandoned cart is that you don’t have the customer’s email yet.

the issue I have with offering discounts is that I have thousands of products. some I can offer a discount or free shipping and some i cannot.

also, what about this would be AI? I don’t think actual AI would be necessary. very gimmicky these days to use the term AI when it is really not.

yeah true, most tools only work if you already got the email, which sucks.
the discount part is tricky too, I had the same issue with mixed margins across products.
I was also skeptical about the whole “AI” thing felt like buzz at first.
but I gave one a shot that actually talks to customers, not just blasts messages. They have some sort of ai agent and i mean it works well for me. Helps to build some loyalty around my business too as it acts like a support rep.
what are you using right now for recovery? That ai app i use is evolvoom.io

I’ll check it out. I email the people myself. lol

I don’t understand the point of that application since we don’t have the email when there is an abandoned cart. seems worthless unless customer are logged in which 95% of the time they are not

that’s a common concern, but shopify usually captures their contact info at checkout even if they’re not logged in that’s how most recovery and email marketing tools work like klaviyo

from my experience, you should be able to recover 40–50% of carts, because people who reach checkout are already interested. but you have to use the right tools you can’t just annoy them with spammy messages. it needs a more thoughtful approach.

not saying evolvoom is the top tool out there (they don’t pay me to promote them), but i really like their approach and it’s been working well for me.

I know some tools give you like pop up messages when they just abandon their cart, but it really annoy customers and that pretty much just hurting your brand.

buddy i was skeptical about ai-powered cart recovery until we tried txtcart last year for our store. we had a $1200 cart abandoned by someone who had questions about international shipping. the ai sent a recovery text, the customer replied asking about duties and taxes, and the ai immediately answered their question with accurate info about our shipping policies. they completed the purchase right away. that kind of instant response is something we could never do manually at scale.

to answer your specific questions:

  1. we use txtcart for sms recovery and it’s been about 3x more effective than our old email-only approach

  2. the ai-driven approach has been super helpful - especially the conversational part where it can actually answer customer questions in real time

  3. we’ve found that addressing the specific reason they abandoned works best - if it was shipping costs, offer free shipping. if it was product questions, provide more info. txtcart’s ai figures this out through the conversation

if you’re building something new, make sure it can actually have meaningful conversations with customers - that’s been the biggest differentiator for us. good luck!

you have each customer opt in to SMS when they abandoned their cart? that’s a stretch. not texting anyone without permission. can get in big trouble for that

Hey @EcomBotPro

This sounds like a promising tool and definitely tackles a pain point for many merchants. I currently use abandoned cart recovery emails but have not explored SMS yet. Email follow-ups work to some extent, but timing and message relevance make a big difference. If the reminder feels generic, most customers ignore it.

An AI-driven tool that adjusts follow-ups based on customer behavior sounds helpful, especially if it saves time and improves conversions. I have found that short, friendly messages with a small incentive like free shipping or a limited-time discount tend to work best. A feature that tests and tracks which type of message works better could also be really useful. Looking forward to seeing how your tool develops.

Cool to see you’re building in this space — we went down a similar path. I used to run an ecom store and started manually calling abandoned carts. The lift was huge — better recovery, higher AOV, and even better repeat rates.

That led to building Callsy — instead of email/SMS, it does voice calls with AI that sounds natural and helpful (not robotic). We found it works especially well when layered on top of existing flows, not as a replacement.

Curious to see how your tool performs — are you considering adding voice to the mix too?

Yes, basically, we do the same thing that you have mentioned.

Smart cart detection, Automated Follow-Ups, Incentive-Based Recovery, Behavior-Based Messaging, Performance Tracking - If the cart item isn’t complete, we can send them Email, SMS, and WhatsApp.

Here are the answers to your questions:
1.) Yes, many of our clients use it and for Emails: They usually recover between 5–15% of abandoned carts. Effectiveness depends on subject lines, send timing, and incentives.

2.) Absolutely. An AI-driven system could:

  • Test subject lines & timing automatically (A/B testing without manual setup).

  • Personalize follow-ups based on customer behavior (e.g., product viewed, cart value).

  • Choose the best channel (email vs SMS vs push) based on past engagement.

  • Reduce manual work while increasing recovery rates.

3.) Urgency + scarcity: “Your cart is almost sold out.”

  • Discounts: Small % off or free shipping (often triggered only if the cart value is high enough).

  • Trust signals: Reminders of free returns, secure checkout, or customer reviews.

  • Personalized product reminders: Using images of what’s left in the cart works far better than generic text.
